Supply Teacher Insurance

We appreciate that it can be difficult, for even the most experienced Head Teacher, or finance officer, to identify how much to budget for supply teacher costs incurred due to accident or illness.

However, the solution can be found in the form of a specialist insurance policy for schools, designed to cover the cost of hiring supply staff or associated costs such as staff needing to work additional hours.

There are two independent schemes, a Traditional Insurance Scheme for smaller Primary or Junior schools, and the Budget Protection Scheme designed for larger schools employing between 20 and 200 staff.

Both schemes can include teaching and support staff, either full or part time, ensuring the entire workforce is covered and the school can continue to function and educate it's pupils.

We help you answer that all important question, "How much should I budget for supply teacher costs?"

You then have peace of mind that the costs are covered if you do experience higher levels of absence than expected. This option, known as an 'aggregate excess' policy, is a proven alternative to traditional insurance and is referred to in the DCSF Supply Teacher Insurance publication, as "possibly the most efficient arrangement" for supply teacher costs.

Supply Teacher costs can, to some extent be estimated as they are affected by training, courses and planned absences. However, what is not known is how much unplanned accident or illness absences might cost.

For example, if you currently self-insure, based on your previous year you might set a budget of £30,000. You known that £20,000 of this amount is for accident and illness supply cover. You therefore, either decide to accept this amount and hope that you will not have any significant long-term absence, or you take out an insurance policy to protect your own retained budget against possible overspend.

A Budget Protection policy enables you to buy cover for a small premium, to protect you in the event of your absence budget being exhausted.
